This method is most suitable for applications with high heat flux capability and unconventional shape facilities. Ali cloud used the data center of Qiandao Lake in Zhejiang to adopt lake water cooling according to local conditions. Deep lake water flows through a completely closed pipeline through the data center to help the server cool down, then flows through the 2.5 kilometers of Qingxi New Town Axis, as a city landscape, and finally returns to the lake cleanly after natural cooling.


With deep lake water cooling and Alibaba customized hardware, the designed annual average PUE (energy efficiency index) is less than 1.3 and the lowest PUE1.17, which saves about tens of millions of degrees of electricity and reduces carbon emissions by more than 10,000 tons of standard coal, and is one of the most energy-saving data centers in subtropical China. In addition, Alibaba has developed a new data center cooling system that immerses the server motherboard in the coolant and uses the excellent heat dissipation capability of the liquid to cool the server.

The Norwegian Green Mountain Company transformed an abandoned NATO ammunition warehouse in Stavanger, Norway, into a data center with a space of 146,000 square feet (13,600 square meters). The three story underground data center is located in the middle of the mountain and makes the landscape undamaged. The data center has two green energy sources provided by hydroelectric power stations. The chilled water cooling server of fjord is 8 C (46 degree F) throughout the year, and is cooled by circulating system.

"Air cooling 2" - water indirectly participates in cooling.


Cologix and Equinix's data center in Toronto, Canada, uses Lake Ontario water to cool their servers. In these two cases, water is indirectly involved in the cooling process. Through the heat exchanger, the air in the data center is correspondingly cooled by a liquid cooling medium, which is then used for the natural cooling of the hardware.


This method is called "air cooling 2".

Liquid cooling down PUE value


Google Belgium's data center, located in Saint-Ghislain, uses evaporative cooling systems to extract water from nearby industrial canals, and designs and manufactures water treatment plants in the station.


The data center uses the cold water from the canal to take heat away, builds its own water treatment plant, and then uses the treated canal water to cool the data center. It uses only cooling towers to cool the water without cooling machines. The data center is the first completely natural cooling data center of Google, reducing the data center. PUE.


The seawater cooling data center of Finland uses 100% of the seawater to dissipate heat. A modular refrigeration unit and a closed internal circulation refrigerated water (fresh water) are used to heat the heat exchanger of the open-type external circulation cooling water (seawater), and then the heated seawater is sent to the outdoor temperature regulating room, where the main function is to mix the hot water supplied with fresh seawater. Before returning to the sea, Google will use more seawater to cool it. Reduced environmental impact.


The promotion and application of liquid cooling technology in various enterprises and countries. It can be seen that liquid cooling is indeed favored by many enterprises and companies. Liquid cooling has many advantages, making it a potential powerful solution for data centers. Perhaps its greatest attraction is flexibility and agility. With the continuous expansion of data centers, the operation of data centers must be more flexible. The improvement of technology and the renewal and iteration of liquid cooling technology will make the application of liquid cooling technology more and more popular.


However, vendors that are starting to think about liquid cooling technology need to be reasonably analyzed and invested wisely, because liquid cooling may play an indispensable role in future data centers.
